Funny thing about this recession-proof boom town of ours: It sure has a lot of poor people! In March, Bloomberg News reported that if Ward 8 were its own city, it would have the country’s highest unemployment. Adrian Fenty’s defeat showed that ignoring this carries a price, which is why the Washington of new condos and upscale farmer’s markets spent a lot of energy this year on agenda items of poor and working-class residents. Vince Gray threw job fairs, sought to cajole developers into bringing basics like groceries and movies across the Anacostia River, and otherwise comported himself like the chief executive of a city with plenty of residents who aren’t busy retweeting lobster-truck locations. Good on him.
