Fillmore Silver Spring, The A huge new venue changed the music scene. But not in the ways people thought.

There was plenty of doomspeaking before the opening of Live Nation’s Fillmore Silver Spring. Political activists lobbed bombs at the cushy deal county pols gave the developer. Certain locals—that’d be you, anti-corporate, indie-leaning showgoer!—worried the 2,000-capacity space would overcrowd the local concert market. Seth Hurwitz, co-owner of 9:30 Club, filed a lawsuit. Maybe we fretted because we’ve had it pretty good: D.C.’s clubs are fairly cheap, their service fees are reasonable (very few local venues use Live Nation’s Ticketmaster), and their vibes are palatably punk. To many, Fillmore and its prefab hippie décor feel inauthentic. Still, by the time the the new venue opened this summer, formerly anxious competitors were shrugging. “After looking at their schedule, I’m not worried,” Hurwitz told City Paper. Reports on the venue have been mostly positive, but I’ve yet to find a reason to make the trek to Silver Spring. Suburbs, those Widespread Panic jamathons and “Pink Floyd Experiences” are all yours.

Dear City Paper-
wow, aren't you special "Silver Spring. Suburbs". Is the paper being written by high school freshmen now?
Youre tripping w/o samsonite city paper! Silver Spring is coming up and the Fillmore is a major reason why, just so far, its had mary j blige, reunited black star AND wale...i wont even look @ what the 9:30 has put on since September...there is no compeition
This lame review almost make me wish Dan Synder lawsuit proceeded to get this rag called the City Paper shut down. "Silver Spring, Suburbs", really? Silver Spring is pretty much as urban if not more urban than several areas of DC and is only getting better.

Furthermore, the 9:30 club has seen it's heyday pass. There's been nothing worthwhile playing at that dump for quite sometime.
What a joke. I don't even live in Silver Spring and I think this writer is just being a jack@ss for no reason. I'd agree that the downtown of Silver Spring is more urban than the vast majority of DC proper.
P.S. I went the Fillmore to see Lewis Black - it's a great venue. Lots of good eats on the block too.
