Where's DJ Rane? A story of gender, money, and how D.C. lost one of its few female radio personalities

The voice, heard floating out of a radio, moves between peppy cheerleader and clear piccolo. It’s light and high and perky, but never slips into helium-laced bimbo-ness. Maybe there’s a dollop of Eartha Kitt’s velvet during the serious moments, but there aren’t many of those. There are many more funny ones, in which a laugh is a series of musical flutters. The voice isn’t just a pleasant accident, though; it’s a mastery of pause and pitch and breathing, along with what those in the industry call “good articulation.”

Sitting across from me at a Starbucks, that voice is finally connected to a face: the opal-eyed, full-lipped visage of Ranelle Sykes. Sykes hasn’t been on the air for a while, and she has a story to tell about that. It’s a story of work and fairness and gender and the law.

But first, there’s a story of a girl who loved music—and a voice that helped her turn that love into a job. Sykes explains the emergence of her voice like this: Growing up black in predominantly white Alexandria, the woman thousands of D.C.-area radio listeners know as “DJ Rane” was an enigma—a middle class military brat with two doting parents who was president of her church choir. A girl who also loved listening to Nas and Tupac. A music obsessive who found in the knock and bang of ghetto music a welcome intrusion on a suffocating life of good grades and God.

“I didn’t live in circumstances similar to what people were saying,” Sykes says. “When I listened to Pac or Nas, for me, there was this sense of identification with how they felt in society.”

For Sykes, that identification turned into a career. From an early age, she and hip-hop were in serious cahoots. She memorized lyrics, and at night, focused her Sony boom box on WPGC-FM 95.5 to dance to D.J. Tigger and his Live Den Show or WKYS-FM 93.9 to jam to Steph Lova, P-Stew, and Poochman of the Live Squad Show. They both blared “all the hottest joints,” she remembers.

“Hip-hop had a profound effect on my life, and you know, I kind of wanted to be a purveyor,” Sykes says. She scored a broadcasting degree from West Virginia University and, after graduation, tried her luck at WPGC—one of the stations she’d grown up listening to. Before long, she was working with the baritone Keith “DJ Flexx” Clagon in the 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. slot on the venerable hip-hop broadcaster, now owned by CBS Radio.

The voice, all of a sudden, was an integral part of the most dynamic African-American radio outlet of Sykes’ childhood. Rane and Flexx were dubbed the Home Team. They cultivated a chemistry that would last them ten years, enough time to dream up features like “Kickass Countdown,” a nightly rollout of the five most popular songs in the DMV, as well as “the Home Team Halftime Show,” during which mixer D.J. Book would throw down a collage of tracks as Sykes and Clagon hyped the festivities.

Clagon would punctuate his on-air time with raspy chuckles and party yells, and Sykes with her bubbliness. The duo came off like a fun couple, the kind that never fought. That’s not how things ended up.

It’s the middle of summer in Washington. On 95.5 FM, Sykes is elatedly shouting about the blazing temperatures as if they were trucks full of cotton candy: “It will be upwards of 95 degrees today,” she says. “Roastin’!”

“Hope you’re drinkin water!,” adds Clagon. “Home team on your radio!”

The country is learning the fate of Casey Anthony, the Florida mom accused of suffocating her two-year-old daughter. Here’s Sykes, delivering the news that the mom has been found not guilty. And there’s Clagon with a comic “oh, boy,” in the background.

Off-air, though, the good times had petered out. Sykes believed she was being stiffed.

In April of 2010, Clagon had shown up at the studio distracted, Sykes says. When she asked him what the trouble was, it all came pouring out. “He confided in me that management had come to him and asked him to give some of his money back, so that I could make more,” Sykes remembers.

Sykes, who’s rarely at a loss for words, was speechless. Up until that point, she says, she’d had no idea that Clagon’s salary trumped hers. She’d always considered them partners.

Our Readers Say

DC Flexx is a non factor, he smokes weed while on duty, he has women at the studio, he doesn't actually give away tickets to callers...he gives tickets away to his friends that "act" as though they have called in....and it is said that he has herpes.
she is being nice everybody knows about the last part....Rain saying entertaining and walks outside while he should be on the air...traslation...women & weed!
Like Don king said " never worry what the next man makes"
As someone who trained under both of them, I can tell Rane was the gears that moved the machine that WAS "The Hometeam.". She is the one who at behind the board, played all the music and commercials, basically, did all the work.
keep me posted
I never listen to WPGC. I mostly listen to WASH.FM and WHUR. However, it was an interesting article to read.
Editor:

I am writing to inform you of two serious errors in this story. I will not allow someone to "Jason Blair" me in an article as I have spent over two decades to build my professional reputation. It needs to be said that I engage in a national civil rights and entertainment law practice. I have received awards from the United State House of Representatives, Maryland State Senate, Governor of California, District of Columbia City Council and City Council of Baltimore for my legal work. I am an award winning documentary filmmaker with the film entitled "Don't Hate: Strippers Fight the Government" scheduled to released on DVD in January 2012. I hold a B.A. degree from California State University Sacramento and a Law degree from American University. Altruism is a part of my life as evidenced by my being a 33° Prince Hall Mason and Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. None of this information was contained in the article but it was all given to the reporter.

Context and truth always matter in every story as those above facts are not the light I was show in.

#1 I never insisted that Mr. Smith meet me at a Strip Club. The facts in our email chain prove it: One August 14, Mr. Smith sent me a message that said, “Jimmy, can we set up a quick in-person interview?” I responded by suggesting an email interview. Then he wrote that he’d prefer to “describe meeting up with you and talking about the case.” Two days later, Mr. Smith called me to see if I was in DC so he could interview me. I told him that I was in Maryland but he could interview me right now over the phone. He then asked will I be in DC anytime today and I told him yes I was having dinner at the 4 star restaurant at Stadium Club and he was welcome to meet me there since he did not want to interview me over the phone. As your paper has reported, the Stadium Club includes a restaurant and a separate strip club. We talked for 2 and a half hours in the restaurant and the interview was over.

Afterwards, Smith asked could he come to the other side where the strippers were while he waited for his cab. We then walked around to the club area which is separate and he talked to a few of the dancers and they told him about my winning injunctions and lawsuits against states and counties that tried to outlaw strip clubs and how it helped them to support their children and their family members (none of that made it to the article). The DJ played one of my favorite songs which was a billboard top 13 hit "No Hands" and the dancers danced for him that's why he was, "gawking as a licorice-thin red g-string falls from the perfectly shaped orange-sorbet buttocks of a stripper named Royal" as she was dancing for him. He talked to them some more and I had someone to drive him in my car to the metro station.

He could have waited outside for his cab in the gated parking lot with security. If nothing sinister is a foot then why not say the name of the restaurant Stadium Club DC in the article or that it was a 4 star restaurant. There are several strip clubs in the DC area but there is only one that has a 4 star restaurant and it is separate from the club.

#2 The article states that “Jimmy Bell has dropped $86 on a plate of filet mignon and lobster” and then sang along as a DJ played a Wacka Flocka Flame song whose lyrics are, “I’m a free niggah, I do what I want.” But a plate of filet mignon and lobster is not $86. You can call the resturant and verify that fact as the price is on the menu. And the song the DJ put on was the billboard top 13 hit "No Hands." No where is this song does it state, "I’m a free niggah, I do what I want." That song does not exist.

I have presented the facts. It's time for you to do the right thing.

Jim Bell, Esq.
LOL @ Jim Bell trying to explain Stadium as a 4 star restaurant.

I'm sure he only reads playboy for the articles.

Questionable counsel actions not withstanding, I'm shocked that CBS was paying her so poorly. $50k a year is not commensurate with the job for anybody, let alone someone who had been doing it for years and is well known in the community. She was definitely there long hours and did a ton of work - I'm very surprised that she was that poorly compensated.

Also, give the profits of the station, it's extra insulting to ask Flexx to decrease his compensation (or GIVE BACK) so that she could be paid more. How about you reduce your executive bonuses, CBS??
Ha! And how many times did he say 4 Star? The funny shyt is STADIUM BILLS ITSELF AS A FIVE STAR NOT A FOUR STAR. LLS!
People used to pay DJ FLEXXX $2000 to play their music on the radio. This is against the law. DC gogo musicians .He sucks
June 2009 Rane Sykes spoke at my son's 8th Grade (Robert Goddard French Immersion School) graduation class and the parents, children and staff were ecstatic as I was. She only charged a couple hundred bucks to speak, she gave away free passes to meet and greet Bow-Wow in person at WPGC in Lanham to about 20 children and most were photgraphed with lil Bow Weezy. She spoke professionally and articulately to the graduates and today I still love her (I been married for 21 years,so this is not flirtin' and glad you married Rane to set a greater example to our Black youth)for being so kind and hope she wins her case and use that law degree for the people and her family first.
* J Bell, attorney give Rane a discount on your fees and hook me up with a meal at the Stadium 5 Star with an exquisite fine Black female dancer and then I gotta be home by Ten o'clock news with my real honey my wife.
Correction: RANE SYKES spoke in June 2005 , 6 years ago and I remember like yesterday how fine and cool she was to everyone by allowing photographs to everyone with her and free stuff from WPGC radio station. She had no babies back then so she gave the school about four hours of her time and never faked her genuineness and so I wish her happiness.
The article was very informative and I'm glad it was reported. I was wondering where Rane was! I used to listen to their show, and I was glad to hear her voice on-air b/c I thought she represented the female energy, like Angie Ang, and of course we know Olivia Fox. It's a great energy on the show when you have males and females together. Everything happens for a reason, and sometimes we go through these messed things in life to place us on our other journeys, in different locations. Sometimes, things don't go down the right way, and our partnerships fade away, and what she and DJ Flexx had as partners ran it's course.

That doesn't take away from the fact.
#1- I'm glad she decided to stand up, and sue them. Surely, it's gender bias...No matter how long it takes, glad she is free enough to speak up about it! Most people didn't even know she has a law degree, but if you listened to her show, she spoke about it every now and then. The Home Team used to bring up alot of social commentary, and issues in the DMV.

#2- DJ Flexx was placed in an awful situation, by management asking him to give up some of his salary...WHAT! There is enough money, for both DJ's to have been compensated well...the fact that he was paid double her salary..They both should have been paid more...It's like this pitted them against each other, when the real issue is MANAGEMENT. Bad Management. While the owner, gets to reap all the financial benefits! I will more than likely after hearing all of this...Boycott WPGC...I may just be one person, but I do not support companies that have a practice of discrimination, and I really like Rane....

#3- She has better goals, visions, to accomplish...this happened to her cause God knew she was the one, to speak up and speak out! She is going to do much better than WPGC could have ever done for her. She is pretty, articulate, and very personable, so the sky isn't even the limit for her. Even though, she received a raw deal....I'm still glad she is taking them to court, and I don't really care that her attorney met at the strip club, can he do his job....That's all I would care about, and she isn't a dummy so she will be good!

I would also say what DJ Flexx does or doesn't do...I mean he is still human, so we all err and make judgement calls that suit us "so we think for the best at that time". He is still human and has made a contribution to go-go, all of that needs to be taken into account. He's gifted and so is Rane! They should have never pitted the two against each other!
Thanks for sharing this story! After reading the article and comments, I was compelled to write.

I agree that Rane should have been paid more than $50K a year...that is shocking.

What happens often times is that upper management and executives of companies fail to do proper evaluations to determine if employees are being paid fairly. There are some employees that worker harder than others in the same position and they each get paid the same. If I am holding up the fort, I should be compensated for it. But it is becoming a lost cause as the rich are more concerned with becoming rich instead of maintaining the quality of their company and the brand, which is directly affected by the staff and how the staff is compensated.

It bothers me that DJ Flexx is reported to have been smoking illegal substances, taking bribes and "entertaining women" on the job. It's time that Blacks learned professionalism for a job setting and stop settling for par or doing half-assed work. I have seen this especially in Washington, DC.

Wake up people!
Jim Bell IS A SNAKE IN GRASS...&MAYBE NEXT TIME RANE...WILL RESEARCH..SALARY NEGOTIATIONS BETTER...& PUT HER LAW DEGREE TO USE....THERE ARE MANY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE IN THE WORLD...WHO DON'T POSSESS ANYTHING MORE THAN A HIGHSCHOOL DIPLOMA.....PROOF IS NOT ALWAYS IN THE PUDDING OR PAPER...IN THIS INDUSTRY TALENT IS WHAT COUNTS...FOR YEARS SHE STOOD IN HIS SHADOW AND DIDN'T SEEM TO MIND...RANE KNOWS...YES SHE IS A SIDEKICK FOR A REASON....MAYBE SHE SHOULD GO BE A LAWYER FOR AN AFRICAN RADIO STATION HHAHHAA...IF THAT CAME ACROSS AS IGNORANT..THEN I GUESS U CAN UNDERSTAND HOW HER CLAIMS OF DISCRIMINATION SEEM....USE ALL THE BRAIN'S YOU WERE GIVEN AND PUT THEM TO BETTER USE....MAYBE U CAN BE JIM BELLS....INTERN AT HIS POOL PARTY EVERY YEAR....OR BETTER YET U CAN REP HIM AND THE SKRIPPERS...LOL...ANYBODY HAVE. When my colleagues feel the need to respond to news articles in such a horrid way, i feel the need to print and report it to their bar.
I really think you need to rethink your decision to hire an attorney who doesn't have enough sense to realize that you have a publication that wants to talk with you about a case involving a gender discrimination suit involving a pretty popular local personality and you think that the Stadium Club, in whatever way you want to describe it, is the best venue to meet the reporter. That is just stupid, and you may have damaged your client with such a bone-headed move.
Is it just me, or was this article about RANE and not her attorney? Mr. Smith did not have to put all of your credentials in his article because it made no difference to the story's content. Please, get over yourself.
@lol...that's so so true....gender discrimination case yet you meet ya lawyer @a tiddy bar....lol that's comical all within itself.....or maybe its becuz..Rane once got down wit the ladies lol...so she felt comfortable..lol...u see how easy it was for me to throw info out there...lol listen if she endured so much over the years from watching her cohost alleged marijuana usage ...oh and his millions of groupies....why did she subject herself to it?....the article painted her as a stellar person...with no flaws lol...yet she stayed and turned a blind eye?....just proves that everyone can have book smarts...but lack common sense....her law degree I guess couldn't provide that...this is a classic case of I DON'T KNOW HOW TO NEGOTIATE LOL...she should have read fine print...the sad part is these two people flawed or not appeared to have a mutual respect for one another but yet once again ...we try to belittle and a black man and bring him down....her beef should have been with the Company not attacking her friend and cohost whom oh wait that so called smoked weed hahahah that's funny.....oh well. Another female bites dust in radio becuz she just couldn't cut it....there are plenty out there who are successful and killing the airwaves....maybe Rane and Olivia Fox should go dance at stadium since she likes doing business there...she can kill two birds with one ass shake and her lawyer will tip her well...this is a classic case of foolery!#smartdumbchick.....*kanye shrugs
WHO CARES!
SHE NEEDS TO GET OVER HERSELF!

WASHCITYPAPER POSTS A HARD HITTING COVER STORY LAST WEEK THAT ACTUALLY HAVE AN AFFECT ON PEOPLE LIVES AND JUST LIKE THOSE SKINS YOU LAY AN EGG THIS WEEK WITH THIS GIBBER JABBER.

DJ FLEXX WAS PUTTING IN WORK WHILE SHE WAS STILL IN SCHOOL SO OF COURSE HE SHOULD GET PAID MORE. THE FACT THAT SHE WENT TO COLLEGE AND RECEIVED A DEGREE DOESNT DISCREDIT DJ FLEXX FROM HIS WORTH. I’LL TAKE STREET SAVVY OVER CLASSROOM IN THIS INDUSTRY ANYDAY.

INSTEAD OF PUTTING HERSELF ON A PLAN OF UPWARD MOBILITY SHE CRASHED AND BURNED BECAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE SHE HAD NO PLACE AND NO SOLID FOOTING (LIKE DJ FLEXX) IN AN INDUSTRY THAT IS TRULY NON-REVELENT IN THE GRAND SCHEME OF THINGS. MAYBE SHE SHOULD HAVE STARTED OUT WITH QUEEN HUGHES @ RADIO ONE INSTEAD OF SPINNING THAT GARBAGE FOR THE MAN.

SHE GOT A LAW DEGREE AND WAS STILL WORKING AS A VOICE PERSONALITY? ON A RADIO STATION WITH A TARGET AUDIENCE THAT STOP LISTENING TO IT IN DROVES WITH THE ADVENT OF SMART PHONES, ITUNES AND THE PROGRAMMING OF ONE'S OWN MUSIC CHOICES. JUST PROVES THAT FOLK COULD BE SMART AS SHIT BUT STILL DUMB AS A MUTHA FUCKA.

SMITTY'S RENDERING ON THIS ISSUE IS BIASED. A MORE CENTERED APPROACH WOULD HAVE GARNERED THE PERSON EVEN MORE PITY THAN HE SHOWED IN THIS PIGEON HOLED, DIVISIVE SAME’OL SAME ‘OL.
Mr. Bell can try and justify his actions all he wants but meeting a reporter or anyone that has business associated with a client at the Staduim Club was not a smart move. Dude, everyone knows that you have meetings afflicated with money or business at Starbucks or Panera Bread. No excuses....he messed up and in my opinion made his client look less credible.
It's surprising that people still read the tabloids. Unsurprisingly, the potential impact of the alleged injustice is diminished by this poorly written piece. Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast your pearls before the swine, lest haply they trample them under their feet, and turn and Rend you. CP stretched across the Atlantic to bake this simple matter into a story of interest, yet only buffeted readers with the same ole tired, diatribe of divide and conquer. As a person groomed in faith one would expect a demeanor of godliness and brotherly love, but there seems to be a contrary spirit at work here. This article displays the compromise of two cardinal rules: Never sell your soul and never speak negatively about another brotha or sistah in public; the latter of which is perpetuated by all the hatin’ comments about Flexx and Rane mentioned above^^^. In Psalms 1 fashion, Nas warned, “watch the company you keep/and the crowd you bring…” Therefore, associating with counsel that fraternizes in an establishment riddled with controversy is an error in judgment. The attorneys (sic) salacious, self-serving appetite for fame and the other usual worldly suspects, envy, pride, and greed are the only winners here. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rane got some nice juicy tittays- sosa likey
My interview with lawyer Jim Bell was instrumental to the article I penned about Ranelle Sykes' fight for equal pay at radio station WPGC. Still, interviewing him at length, I only used a fraction of the material he gave me for the story.

Bell is a sharp lawyer with a long list of credentials and a pile of interesting cases. I'd love to write a profile on him, getting into just who he is, and outlining the fascinating role he plays in the city. But the piece I wrote for the September 29 issue of Washington City Paper, "Where's D.J. Rane?' was about Sykes. That's why I didn't include more details about his lengthy and successful professional and civic history.

When I contacted Bell for an interview, he informed me I was free to ask him questions via email or phone. Though I utilize those mediums for daily reporting for the Washington City Paper blogs, when writing a cover piece, I prefer to meet an interview subject face-to-face, so I can draw a more profound picture of them. When I explained that to Bell, he suggested we meet up at the Stadium Club located at 2127 Queens Chapel Road NE. Minutes later, I called him back to ask if we could meet someplace a little closer to City Paper, as I was swamped. Bell told me that if I wanted to do an in-person interview I would need to come to the club. I agreed, and later wrote that Bell "insisted" on meeting there.

I thought that it was important to include the meeting. Bell's preference for the club showed that he was a complicated individual, willing to fight against gender discrimination and at the same time, meet at a "gentleman's club." It wasn't meant to be disparaging, just to add a layer to the story.

Before leaving the club, which has a restaurant as well as a performance area, Bell asked me if I wanted to visit the performance side of the club. (Diners at the well-regarded steakhouse can, in fact, see into the strip area). I said I did. Bell finished up his meal. For color, I decided to record what he'd ordered: filet mignon and lobster tail. Looking the items up later via Stadium's online menu, I saw the price of the filet was $40 and the tail 46. I added the two numbers together and surmised it was a $86 meal. I thought the expensive cuisine conveyed Bell's financial success.

Before long, Bell and I sat down in two lounge chairs in the performance area. At some point, Bell summoned two dancers, and had them do a "table dance." I took notes furiously enough so that someone passing by remarked, "What is this, a library?"

During that time I quoted Bell as singing along with a line that I assumed showed up in the Woka Flocka Flame song Bell had asked the DJ to play. I was wrong on that. I haven't been able to find the lyrics in the artist's work. We have corrected the story on that point.

Careers and reputations are a fickle thing, and I didn't mean to impugn Bell's. He's obviously a top tier lawyer. And I don't, by the way, have anything against clubs like Stadium. I spent an enjoyable evening there and would go back.

All the other bullshit aside, the questions are:

Was DJ Rane fairly compensated?

Does she have a case?

Is her lawyer competent?

How will a favorable verdict/outcome help other female broadcasters?

All the rest about who and what and where is unimportant:

Like having a law degree...that doesn't make you a practicing lawyer. It means you passed the bar exam.

What Flexx did/does/doesn't do is on him and station management; if they allow it, then its 'sanctioned'.

Having a meal in a club/strip club is not illegal and Bell ain't your Pastor so calm the fuck down. This the real world, not 'Law & Order'.

The bigger picture is: Are women in the radio business being discriminated against? If so, why? And, if so, what should be done to change that?

Paging Dr. Hughes...oh Catherine Elizabeth, are you there?
OK, she was and is cheesy. The fact of the matter is that while I'm not a fan of the away team (they aint true DC folks, fuck that DMV shit and secondly Flexx was not and is not GOGO) but he still had and has more experience than the so called DJ Rane. Secondly, considering that she used to listen to the the Live Squad on WKYS she can't be much older than 35 or so. Considering that she went to law school and it said she did that while she was working at the station that meant that she had to be going part time or in the evening so she wasn't at all of the damn club venues and activities that Flexxx's cheesy ass was at. You see he was actually doing more and has been doing this for longer.

In addition Flexxx also has a greater name recognition than Rane does, I mean you can put on his song or say his name and most folks know who he is even if they don't follow or approve of him. At the same time DJ Rane might as well be Angie Corley who used to be on Tigger's show. Furthermore comparing her to folks such as the Kitty of the City just shows that this so called reporter don't know shit about local radio. J. Jones goes back to the days of the morning show with Mike and Joe on KYS before Russ Parr was on the show. She is an old school shrimp boat honey and has put in her work.

As for Olivia Foxx and her corney ass, she wasn't that great and honestly all of her shows after Russ Parr were failures because she was horrible as well. How come we constantly get upset about these horrible folks who don't get paid. I would even say that it should be considered an insult that we are calling her DJ Rane when she was just known on the station as Flexx and Rane.

Now for J. Bell, I'm sorry Nupe, but come on she is a law school graduate and wants to sue a big time company and she picks him. If she was going to pick a nupe to take on the case, especially one for unfair treatment shouldn't she get that dude who won the Eddie Bauer case back in the day?

Lastly, I must say this, now that Rane is gone the Flexxx show isn't better or worse which shows her lack of skill and impact on the show. I mean when Steph left to go to BET/New York and the Live Squad had just the two fellas, it wasn't as great.

To the Author, stop fucking with folks, Jimmy Bell is not the one to try to run a fast one on. He is going to read an article about his clients and he is going to call you out on that, that is just some high school paper shit. You better go find his old TV Commercial, he told you then, he out for his.
if they had strippers at libraries, there wouldn't be almost closed now open. [That is a fundraiser idea for DCPL. Stacked in the stacks].
Franny you seem angry at folks with an education,,lol you talk smart so mabe you are one who never did anything with it so you are bitter... so so sad... LOOK !! PPL GET EDUCATED TO GET TO GET HIGHER SALARY,,, BOTTOM LINE! IF SHE WANTS TO FIGHT FOR WHAT SHE BELIEVE THEN SHE SHOULD HAVE THAT RIGHT,,, YOU ARE NO JUDGE NOR JURY JUST A BITTER HATER,,, AS FAR AS JIM BELL,,, PPL SAY BAD THINGS ABOUT ALLL LAWYERS SO WTF,,, HE IS ALWAYS GETTING HIRED,, ARE YOU? AND RANE HAS A LAW DEGREE SO SHE KNOWS WHAT SHE IS DOING,,, DO YOU HAVE A LAW DEREE??? DONT THINK SO,, AND HANGING IN A STRIP CLUB JUST SHOWS THAT HE LOVES THE LADIES,, WHAT WRONG WIT LOVIN THE LADIES? YALL HATERS IN FULL EFFECT,, GET YOUR OWN LIVES TOGETHER,,SMH
COME ON YALL,,,,Rane getting Jim Bell to represent her isnt as bad as you think,, have you checked his win/loose percentage?? And lets not forget she is law educated also,,, shes not stupid.... together they will be a force to rweckin wit....
Gonna have to agree with Kevin on this one. People seek to obtain higher education so that they can get paid better. It makes sense. It's not rocket science. Why SHOULDN'T she get paid the same as Flexx for doing the same job? It's about gender discrimination...point blank. You would think that women, if noone else, would see that from the article. I don't know about most people, but I went to college so that I could make more money in the long run...that's what most people who graduated from college want. Who gives a damn what lawyer she hired or where he took whoever to get lunch. People always focus on the wrong things. If you truly knew her, you would know that she is a beautiful, educated, hard working person with an even more beautiful spirit. Rane was one of the best radio personalities WPGC has ever seen and should have been compensated as such. I don't really care for how the article was written because it comes off as bitter...but hey that's the media for you...their job is to deliver a "juicy" story. Seems like it was a management problem to begin with. Like she said in the article "Flexx doesn't sign the paychecks"...it's up to management. Who cares if she came there after him? I'm quite sure that you too would raise hell if you found out your coworker, who was doing the SAME job as you were, was getting paid TWICE your salary. I'm ECSTATIC that she is suing their asses off. Most people don't get paid to do the things that they LOVE to do. I wonder if it occurred to folks that maybe she was on the radio because it's something she LOVED doing. Why isn't she "allowed" to have a law degree AND be an on air personality? But I digress...people always want to find the negative in everything.

We love ya Rane!
This is perhaps the funniest comment section in Washington City Paper history. All I want to know is...Stadium better than Fuego...? or no? Which place features a greater number of strippers w/ c section scars? The people NEED this info! Actually thats a great cover story for you, WCP. The history of the Butt Nekkid in Washington DC. RIP Club 55

I'm glad Rane and Olivia took a stand. I can't speak on their responsibilities and how they compared to their co-host's but i can say that i've seen similar examples of this type of unfair, sexist treatment in my radio career. Sexual discrimination is just one ugly part of it too. You often see one or two people at a radio station making big salaries while the rest are scraping by. I'm sure if all radio salaries were made public sh ___ would be hitting the fan. Part of it may be poor negotiating but some of it is discrimination and politics.
Hawaiians are like Legionnaire’s Disease. They are commonly found in hot tubs and it’s best to eradicate early.
"go-go itself is a specialized form of hip-hop.."

Whoever wrote this article is not from DC. Before go-go was even go-go---when it was just called "band music"---it was being played live in ice cream that rode through the neighborhoods in the summer time. It had nothing to do with hip hop. It was and is a live form of music. And it came before hip hop.....Good God.
Rend Smith, I'm glad you gave a response to the lawyer's feedback. It really does show that Sykes’ lawyer didn't really insist as much as you had a deadline. And the fact that a song played that stated " I’m a free n*****, I do what I want” is really immaterial. If you were at a Starbucks interviewing, say, a corporate accountant, would it matter if the Sex Pistols where playing in the background? I know this lawyer was not smart to meet a strip club, but are you smart to see that maybe you have painted a very negative (I could say perhaps racialy-tinged) impression of Syke's lawer? Seriously amazing how hard you work to taint a picture of somebody. And what's up with this "orange-sorbet buttocks"? Damn shame your reporting is so angled.
I wish Rane much luck on this case. It is a shame they have been pitted against each other. I am a 40ish AA woman, I never really cared to listen to this show but I am very familiar with the Flexx and Rane show on PGC. They seem to have great chemistry and the young people enjoy the show. The fact that he was asked to give back money shows that PGC management knew they were underpaying her. They should be ashamed because they are making enough money to compensate them both well. I hope the courts make PGC pay her over and above what they owe her. Also, Russ Parr should have never let Olivia Foxx get away. The show has not been the same since she left years ago.
@ Franny! You need to stop it with all the hating . It is what it is. Apparently you are friends of Flexx or maybe you are Flexx in disguise, but you know damn well, that is not fair that he got paid so much more. Flexx is not big time. He is a local dj, who in reality is not that smart. And his voice is annoying as hell. Rane deserved equal pay if she was doing equal or more work. Franny or whatever your name is, you need to shut up with all that nonsense and learn how to write before you go in on someone for protectiing their rights. She has a rite to fight for what she believes.
I always dug Rane and thought she made the show...

All involved, CLOWNS!

The dude who wrote this piece, CLOWN, had the audacity to minimize GO GO with 1 bamma swoop of a sentence......."go go itself is a speccialized form of HIP HOP"?????????!!!

WTF is that exactly, I mean come on man, what would you "propose" New Orleans bounce to be, a specialized form of CLASSICAL???

Problem here is that I'm biased, biased because I never believed in "OUTSIDERS" serving up my music, my food or my culture; quite ass backwards if you ask me! TIGGER, RANE and this bamma Flexx are allllll outsiders, BAMMAS!

But in defense of da bamma Flexx, he was the Big Personality in that line up and her case shopuld be thrown out and to think when all else failed, a sista "throws a brotha under the bus" after he confided in her about managements ultwerior motive, WOW, talk about sleeping with the enemy, geeeesh!
@Kevin...never angry...babe ...I'm also college educated...difference is instead of boasting of my academic success..&related degrees....I Actually use them!!....my problem ..is with women who seem to use the sex discrimination premise for shortcomings...now granted it happens...but in this case it seems more of:a woman with a lot of book sense...yet lack common sense....see most people with common sense would have attempted to sell themselves on the basis of her paper trail...even if the end result would have been...YOUR DEGREE IS NOT PERTINENT TO THE JOB DESCRIPTION....then at least she would have had her answer years ago!...yet she played her position!....hell ask the people of the city..when FLEXX wasn't there who tuned in? When Russ Parr is absent...do we really care that much about Alfredas?....not to mention Olivia Foxx....this is simply the case of an average Dj...who did not bring more to table regarding..Theo job at hand...sounds to me like peeps are in her ear....I will leave u with Jay Z.......if Rane was more prominent in city than Flexx...MAKE ANOTHER RANE.....she has the option of other urban stations....prove city wrong...lol...she's not even in Angie Angs (93.9) league....now shawty over there bring suntin to table just ask Cthe station....when Quik Silva is away she truly hold it down......so Kevin maybe instead of saying I'm bitter..maybe you....need to campaign for ya girl better..cuz it sounds like maybe you on her nutts...fact is irrefutable...when company backs ya!...instead of proving to everyone she was more qualified than FLEXX...to the readers...prove it to CBS THEY ARE THE ONES THAT SIGN THAT CHECK!
Foolery at it's best...a law degree means nothing if u aren't using it...just means ya passed the bar.....that's like getting graduating from Med school...but you solicit a job in home depot....everytime the parking lot gets filled with shopping carts....you shout but I'm a DOCTOR....I should have a better position...make more money....Hahahha GTFOH....yall clowns if you can't see that for what it is!
well i have to agree with Franny...Unfortunately i know both of them well, and while i repsect Rane's hustle, ambition, & accomplishments.....she has allowed the media to attack her long time friend....she could have still sued however left the mud slinging out... .that's the sad part becuase that's not her character at all....when the story broke i was shocked!!!....however if she wants to bring a suit against the station that's fine>>>just think she allowed them to coax her into negativity with accusations of misconduct on the job with her cohost and friend....as shawty stated there are many sides to 1 story....and knowing both of them very well...this is a smh moment! i've always asked her why she settled for radio with all her accomplishments>>...as for city and who reps gogo CROWD>>>WHO CARES!...NONE of the stations here are that great...and as well as i respect Rane....she didnt add or take away from the show....since she has been gone ...its still the same.....DRY...her fight now is proving that with her accomplishments such as law degree>>they were necessary qualifications to do the job she was doing...if PGC's criteria doesnt state that as a qualification, she will be in for fight of her life...because even with all the accusations of her cohost having groupies & weed>>she has to prove it....this whole post is interesting in that...i see people are quick to believe everything that they read!....i know both of these people and they both are good people!
Again, this case is not about sex discrimination - its about pay discrimination.
Just wanted to say that Rane you are missed and your situation is exactly it's commonly taboo for employees to discuss their salaries. It's fairly obvious that you were "originally" brought on as a side kick. While you definitely grew into much more it was shrewd management that perpetuated the pay disparity. I suspect it's more from your personality than your education that makes you such a great MC. You should feel proud that you made the home team into such a popular brand in DC. It should also be said that it's obvious WPGC management is trying to change it's format as it has systematically killed off all of it's popular segments. Justine Love got whacked, Donnie Simpson's Morning Show, then the lunch time throw back with Michelle Wright. It was only a matter of time before they killed the Home Team. At least you are with good company. There is no longer any reason for D.C.'s urban community to listen to that station. So, assuming management are not complete morons they must be doing this purposely to justify switching to another format, most likely Latino.

That said, I'm sure with all your skills you're gonna do fine and with your next career earn all the rewards and compensation that you have worked for. Thanks for being such an awesome MC!
...and you folks who are praising Angie Ange are straight tripp'n! She ain't half of what you guys thinks she is. In fact, it's really sad that she's just taken what she learned while interning with the Home Team and then ran across the street to KYS to compete with them. That was some traitorous ish!

That said, I gotta co-sign with all the comments that unless she can show how that law degree makes her a better entertainer Rane's facing a tough court battle.

And let's stop with the mud slinging, Flexx is doing the stuff that makes him Flexx, let's not hate. This fight should be directed solely at the radio station management, and the muck racking doesn't help the case but splatters mud on the flinging, if you know what I'm sayin'.
Too much damn drama for me to keep up.
For those hating on her law degree...she does have a degree in Broadcasting! Very relevant for the position.
Well well, I used to work at WPGC. I was there when it was in its hayday. DJ Flexxx arrived a few years after I got there. It was right after his success with the song 'Water Dance'. He had created a buzz with his parties and the song, not too mention the video which was filmed at a pool and featured off duty cops getting felatio, lol. The program director at the time was always on the lookout for personalities that would up the stations ratings. That is why he went after Donnie Simpson and paid him so well. In any event, as Rane arrived, to be honest, she never fit at all. Sorry to break it to you, but she was an unnatural addition and it always seemed awkward. As I would return to DC to visit family, I would listen to Flexxx and Rane. I for one was annoyed at how bad the show was. Flexxx was a natural, Rane was forced. That's just how it is. You can argue about he level of Flexxx's off air success, and his celebrity. It is, however, what landed hm at PGC to begin with. The station went after him to offer him a job. And through the years he moved up the ranks. Rane applied and they put her along side a veteran to give her a chance. In her defense, she should definitely be paid more than 50k a year. But Flexxx should have been making more, as should anyone in his position. Do you think they were paying Chris Paul as much as Donnie back then? When I was at PGC, we were all underpaid. Management was good at finding talented people to do the work, and really know what was going on in music, and using that to their advantage while they took all the credit. Sorry to break it to the fans, readers, and listeners, but Rane was not discriminated against.
I hate the way people are talking about DJ Flexx. It wasn't his fault. This world treats woman different, especially in Radio. If you ever worked for WPGC you would know that. I am glad Rane is taking up for herself, after all she knows what is illegal and what is not. She is very intelligent, and she went to law school. I'm sure she wanted to file many law suits in the past--she had every right to be upset.
LOOK JOE!!!!! I BEEN KNOWING FLEXX SINCE HE WAS DRIVING A RED ESCORT........NOBODY ON HERE EVEN MENTIONED FLAVOR1580 IF YOU DONT KNOW BOUT DAT THEN YOU AINT INTO THE RADIO STATIONS AS YOU SAY YOU ARE........I MEAN HE CHANGED A LIL BIT BUT THATS HALF THE WORLD .......THIS NIGGA FLEXX PUT IN ALOT OF WORK I MEAN ALOT OF WORK FROM THE MIRAGE ALL THE WAY TO DA LEGENDS.....TRUST ME SLIM A REAL NIGGA I GUESS MONEY CHANGED HIM.........RESPECT IT OR CHECK IT !!!!!!!!!
JUST TO LET YALL KNOW I DROPPED OUT IN THE TENTH GRADE.......I MOVED WITH MY SCIENCE TEACHER WHO TOOK REAL GOOD CARE OF ME HOW CAN I SAY THIS .....SHE HAD A GOOD HEAD ON HER SHOULDERS.......I DROPPED OUT TO BECOME A PLUMMER......IF ANY LADIES ARE IN NEED OF MY SERVICE GET @ ME WWW.PEPPERRONIEXTRAOLIVES.COM I ALSO DO LIVE WEB CAM........LOL...........ONELUV IN DA HOUSE ISAID ONELUV IN DA HOUSE CLOSE YOUR MOOOOOOOUTH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Opinion- I'm glad she's off the air, and we could really do without Flexx as well. The show was terrible.

Fact-$50K broadcasting income/$200K+ law degree bad career choice in the first place.
So here's some facts for you all DJ Flexx is a Company guy around WPGC anybody's who works there will tell u I worked there myself and saw it 1st hand they people who ran Wpgc love him true story. 2nd he is a GoGo music blood sucker 1st he was the Payola guy for years there with GoGo band he charged $2000 month for 4spins a day this is a fact and Everybody who work there new this . 3rd if u didn't have the money you had to let him have your songs and let's him put it on your Album he had his own record company called Bald head records all of the CCB songs My Fatty on his company iam classy on his company google it if u don't believe me then the Mambo Sauce records on his album Welcome to Dc and or Miraclis on his so last retirement album so the point is all of the songs he own or where on his record label then they got played. 3rd the water dance song he got sued for by Northeast Goovers google that' also so in the GoGo world he just took and charge us Rare Essence had to put him on the freaks come out at night to get it played Tabai Boney had to put him on songs he always force his way and and bands had to do it to get played and WPGC KNEW it . So one last time DJ Flexx has been the company Payola guy and Google my facts and how many songs he is on. One last thing Uncalled 4 band aka UCB had to pay $3500 to get the song Sexy Lady played this is fact. Now google how many GoGo got in regular Rotation the last 10 years and see how many was on his record company bald head records the truth is there if you want it . Good bye now !!!!!!!!!
It appears as if many of the comments are being taken very personally. Im sure that a few of the comments are DJ personalities of WPGC or family members of WPGC; its evident. What many fail to realize is that WPGC did exactly what they were striving to do, which is put two African Americans against each other. Do you honestly think, this radio station would ask Howard Stern to give up his salary for the sake of another. thats ridiculous..The radio station has the money, they paid Donnie Simpson $1 million a year. Money is the root of all evil. I say Boycott WPGC and dont listen, its obvious they dont care about their African American listeners or Dj's. Rane's voice was heard in the communities when there were community or national issues. Shame on WPGC. We have to do better and demand better fam, for ourselves. Stick together and stop bringing each other down, thats what they want you to do. As for WPGC... Dueces...
Okay folks. enough is enough. first of all, the young lady does have a broadcasting degree from West Virginia University. I believe that makes her more than qualified to do the job and get paid fairly for doing it. I know that women have been discriminated against forever. Never quite making the same as their male partners. they have been receiving lower salaries as well as more duties than their male counter parts for years. why is this woman so wrong for wanting equality on the job? you are bashing her for what a reporter wrote? who incidentally see things in his own world and writes things as he see them. it's not necessarily what actually happened or what was said. just look at the discrepency between him and Jim Bell. I pray that Rane gets justice for this injustice. As far as Jim Bell.... thank you for being you. so many times we allow our status or our titles to change who we are. I'm so proud of you for all of your success. you did nothing wrong. he wanted your time. you offered a phone and email interview. he should have swallowed whatever it was that he thought about the venue of choice. shit you did him a favor. you were on your own time not his. you don't have to explain yourself to anyone. those of us who know you well respect all that you do. lastly, if you are arguing sex discrimination you must give instances to uphold your arguement. I'm sure it was nothing personal against Flex.
First, let me say I am shocked by their salaries. They work at a station where the morning drive guy was making seven figures and she though mid-five figures was good given her show's ratings. Who was advising Rane? Second, contract negotations are "individual." These people are entertainers. I highly doubt CBS Radio has a salary/grade structure for its on-air talent. So what is going to be the basis of her gender discrimination claim? If someone offers you $50,000 and you take it and offers your co-worker the same and he/she declines and asks for more and is able to negotiate a higher salary that is not discrimination. That's called bargaining. Rane got what she bargained for and Flex got what he bargained for.
Oh and about Olivia Fox: She's done exactly what since she stopped by Parr's sidekick? Looks like RadioOne bet on the right talent and was correct in its salary assessment.
First of all I do feel that the radio station was in fact the ones that created the DRAMA how can you ask one radio personality to take a salary cut in order to pay another radiio personality more that's un heard of. As far as Raine's representation we all know as well as the Mr. Jim Bell, Esq he is well educated but is a true G to the fame and game DC has to offer has money will Spend.....That's All I Gotta Say...But you don't handle a professional meeting at the Stadium Club that mades the both of you look a little on the unprofessional side. You can spend what you want on dinner, drinks true but if you don't want to be seen in a certain light stay away from the light and this is not to criticize you because I know your credentials are tight and you are in face indeed about your business and its not what you do its how you do it....
This article is trash. Plain and Simple.
I feel bad for Rane because I can certainly relate to how she might have felt to find that out. However, as she said, she probably has a different purpose that will be realized in Kenya.
Is there any update to this case?
Did Rane have a successful pregnancy?
Is she back from Kenya ?
@Bill. Olivia got married and pregnant, her daughter was born in 2003. She was diagnosed with kidney failure(still on dialysis) so she did take off all of 2004.
She moved to Tampa Florida's WBPT and hosted WBTP's morning radio show for 2 years.

Radio 1/cathy hughes/alfred liggins came crawling back. OF returned to DMV working the overnight shift on WKYS [the very radio station she left in december 2002]. She hosted 'Out The Box With Olivia Fox .
Radio 1 promoted her and she moved to their sister station/adult station with a better gig [ DAYTIME ] in hosting ' from 10-3 on majic 102.3 from jan 2008-june 2010.

So she has done very well Bill!
I didn't know the details pertaining to Rane's absence however, I did notice it. Honestly, Rane is the one who captured my attention when it came to the show of the "Home Team." During the time that Flexx and Rane had their show, I was growing tired of the same lame messages that hip-hop was delivering. I didn't feel that hip-hop was growing with me. At best, the tracks and catchy hooks were the only thing keeping me in the game. Listening to Rane really helped to keep my ear in a little longer. I didn't know that Rane had so much going on in her personal life (such as pursuing her education). Learning about that piece certainly makes me understand why I felt I could relate to Rane. Her commentary seemed to be in alignment with my experiences and now it's evident that she was/is a person who was trying to improve herself and preparing to make a mark in this world. I wish that Rane could make a comeback so that more people like me would have someone to identify with on the airwaves but based on the feel of the the executives of the radio stations, that's not happening. Rane, I wish you the best and thank you for fighting with us and for us women who know their worth! One more thing, she has a GREAT VOICE!!!
Too funny! Ranelle suing for discrimination. Let me tell you ALL something... I went to WVU with Ranelle. I was good friends with her. While attending WVU she was straight up lesbian. :O Oops, cat's out of the bag. This is karma for acting the way she did toward those that were there for her, as her friends, her 'clique', and those that supported and encouraged her. I can TOTALLY believe she threw ole boy (DJ Flexx)under the bus after he confided in her. That's not the first time she's done that, and I'm sure it won't be the last! She was shady like that. None of us knew just how shady until one day, out of the blue, she decided to 'go straight'. She dropped everyone in her life like a bad habit! She would go as far as to cross the street or duck into buildings just to avoid people that she had known and been close friends with for YEARS (straight or gay)! When someone finally DID catch up with her she was asked why she doesn't talk to any of her old friends anymore... she said it was because she didn't want to associate with "That kind". Funny, you weren't saying that the years you probably banged half of WVU's lesbian population, including trying to sleep with me while you were dating one of my family members. Well Ranelle, maybe they just didn't wanna pay more to "Your kind", meaning someone who did not have the same amount of experience in radio, and was not as recognizable of a radio personality as DJ Flexx was. Ever think about that? With a law degree I would have thought she would have known how to negotiate a contract. Who cares what someone else makes? It's none of your business. Worry about your OWN contract! That poor guy confided in her, and she tried to hang him out to dry! She was offered a set pay and she agreed to it, period. If she didn't like it she could have refused. Flexx was more popular, and had been working there long before she came, hence the pay. Who cares who is more educated? Typical Ranelle slam. I can totally see her saying something like that. He has experience. Some of the smartest people (education wise) are dumb as rocks when it comes to the common sense department! She didn't even win the case... it was "Settled" I know if I had a law degree I sure wouldn't settle for anything less than what I thought I deserved. If she TRULY felt she had a case, why not take it to court? Why not fight for what she believed in so strongly? Because she FAILS, that's why. Suing for discrimination... people in glass houses... Karma's a b*tch!
