Flying Anne
Directed by Catherine van Campen

Catherine van Campen’s portrait of Anne, an 11-year old suffering from Tourette’s, starts with small, quick cuts and quickly stops itself—which is clearly intentional. Anne is striking to watch, whether she’s struggling to contain her most prominent tic—licking—or “flying,” i.e., tumbling, climbing, running. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s a gorgeously shot study of a girl who doesn’t want to be ostracized at the one point in life when anyone can be.
