Fucked Up at the Rock & Roll Hotel Thursday, September 9

For a punk band that releases 7-inch records longer than entire Minutemen albums, and with a name that guarantees its exclusion from most family publications, Toronto’s Fucked Up has done quite well for itself. Gravel-throated lead singer Pink Eyes is a man with the shirt-wearing habits—or lack thereof—of Iggy Pop and the physique of Captain Lou Albano. The band’s distinct strain of hardcore reaffirms the genre’s visceral potency while sidestepping its penchant for nondescript chugging guitar and macho posturing. Fucked Up’s most recent output—like last year’s The Chemistry of Common Life and its epic, Zodiac-themed single series—push the boundaries of what can be legitimately incorporated into a hardcore song (flutes solos? Christmas covers?). Live, the band creates quite a stir, so those without any desire to brush shoulders (or bare chests) with Mr. Eyes should plan to hang back at the bar.

FUCKED UP PERFORMS WITH CLOUD NOTHINGS AND GIVE AT 8:30 P.M. AT THE ROCK & ROLL HOTEL, 1353 H ST. NE. $12. (202) 388-7625.
