Standout Track: “My Life Is a Movie,” a grim, autobiographical take on the cinematic near-cliché that’s been popular in hip-hop lately. Rapping with a Scarface-esque rasp, Slim waxes about his many trials and tribs over producer JButtah’s haunting vocal sample.

Musical Motivation: “You need the kind of pour-all-your-insides-out [songs] to let everybody know exactly what you’re going through,” says the Adams Morgan-bred 27-year-old. “I just wanted people to know that this is what I’m walking through and I want [them] to walk through this shit with me.” That soul-searching takes Slim back to some dark places: “The two felonies I plead to/The broken bones that I bled through/The broken home I was raised in/The five different facilities I was caged in.”

Co-sign of the Times: Once and forever Dipset capo Jim Jones pops up on “My Life Is a Movie” for an unexpected guest verse. But the Harlemite comfortably tones down his usual baller’s attitude for the very personal track. “He got right with the vibe of it,” Slim says. Jones dug the record so much that he previewed a shortened mix of it on his own Ghost of Rich Porter tape, possibly opening Slim up to Jones’ very loyal New York fanbase. “That’s the way the game works now,” says Slim. “You need the co-signs from the dudes that they already know.”

Kingpen Slim releases The Beam Up 2 on July 28.
