The Beerspotter: Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold How great is it?

Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold

Where Spotted: Sherry’s Wine & Spirits, 2315 Calvert St. NW

Price: $10.99/6-pack

Something Gold Can Stay: There’s a bell curve to liking beer: You start with crap, then discover extreme flavors in face-melting IPAs and milkshake stouts. But no fire can burn that hot forever. Soon you’re geeking out over subtle, malty lagers that Extreme You would’ve shunned. Dortmunder Gold is that kind of beer, sturdy at 6 percent abv and sweet with grain like a fresh baguette.

Beginning to See the Lite: An old Bud commercial once said that golden lagers are hard to make because you can’t “hide imperfections” like you can in dark beer. It’s kind of true—how many of your favorite microbreweries even make lagers? Great Lakes does, and its Yuengling-killer, the amber-tinted Eliot Ness, is just as special as the Dortmunder Gold.

It is about time that Great Lakes has finally started to get their beer here in DC. A friend told me that RFD had some GLBC beer on tap and in bottles. NOw, let's get more and more bars to carry them.
Big Hunt now has 4 Great Lakes beers on tap.
First had Great Lakes when I went to Cleveland, and got it straight from the brewery's tap. Some of the best beer I've ever had, but I heard they don't distribute outside the Great Lakes region. Imagine my surprise two nights ago at RFD when I got a delicious Dortmunder Gold. I'm thrilled to see this Ohio chain stretch to the District. We won't fully succeed though until we find a way to import the deliciously seasonal Christmas Ale. My mouth waters for it already.
Best beer, finally here!
Also available at DVines
Beyond excited that Great Lakes is finally here. We left Cleveland 3 years ago and leaving the beer was the hardest thing about leaving. We've been smuggling cases in for years, especially Christmas Ale because it is no longer Christmas without it. Finger crossed we get Christmas in July!!
It's not made in Ireland, I know,

But give this good lager a go,

You'll be filled with wonder,

When tasting Dortmunder,

Thanks be to Great Lakes Brewing Co.
