Little Margie Clark at Westminster Church Monday, May 25, with Jacques Johnson and Bobby Felder

Westminster Church started its critically acclaimed Friday local jazz night in 1999, and due to popular demand, recently added a Monday blues and soul program. Little Margie Clark will be playing at the latter show, but could just as well fill the jazz slot. Clark started singing with her D.C. soul group the Jewels in the ’60s and went to play the Howard Theater before performing nationally with James Brown. Tonight, she’ll warble in a band that includes saxman Jacques Johnson and multi-instrumentalist Bobby Felder. Known to some as singer/bassist Meshell Ndegeocello’s father, Johnson was a longtime member of the U.S. Army Band and the Coaster, and now directs the Blues Alley Youth Orchestra. Felder was an arranger with the Air Force band, performed with D.C. jazz legends Charlie Byrd and Shirley Horn, and taught at UDC. Expect lots of energy—both from the horns and from Clark, whose gospel-rooted vocals are strong enough to wake up anyone nodding in the back pew.

LITTLE MARGIE CLARK PERFORMS FROM 6–9 P.M. AT WESTMINSTER CHURCH, 400 I STREET SW. $5. (202) 484-7700.
