SUNDAY

If you’re a metal band and you’re gonna name yourself after a work of Roman literature, the obvious choice is the debauched classic of all classics, Satyricon. “Aeneid” sounds like some sort of infected polyp and “metamorphoses” is more suited to a prog band, but Petronius’ tale of mad orgies, werewolves, and murder seems perfectly suited to the black-metal stylings of Satyricon. The prime mover for this diabolically decadent band, saddled with the giggle-inducing pseudonym of Satyr Wongraven, is joined by longtime drummer Frost and whatever fellow fiends they can fish out of the fjords. Satyricon’s music is surprisingly melodic, and the band always tempers its blast-beat sound with strangely effective experimental touches—electronica, piano meditations, jazz vocals. And after 10 years together, Satyricon still sounds harder than a Latin-class third-declension quiz. Satyricon plays with Infernal Majesty and 3 Inches of Blood at 5 p.m. at Jaxx, 6355 Rolling Road, West Springfield. $17. (703) 569-5940. (David Dunlap Jr.)
